Capable of thriving in most climates silverfish prefer to dwell in dark damp areas such as basements attics kitchens and bathrooms. Silverfish may be found in the attic and basement areas in storage boxes. It doesn t necessarily mean that they are feeding there. Unfortunately these pests are nocturnal.

Around your home you re most likely to find them in attics basements crawl spaces bathrooms and kitchens. In homes with attics silverfish often occupy the attic space where they get into cardboard boxes and feed on stored clothes books papers and other items. Silverfish are drawn to moisture and often infest damp dark places like bathrooms laundry rooms basements attics and garages. But since i had the attic insulation which had been fiberglass changed to blown in cellulose this past summer i ve been finding silverfish in the kitchen bathroom hall and bedrooms.

If these two conditions are removed the silverfish will not be able to survive. Silverfish are common pests but can be hard to spot because they prefer to live in dark moist places where damp is common. They eat the glue on the boxes and book bindings. They prefer room temperature areas with 70 90 humidity.

Over the years books stored in the attic did show evidence of silverfish. They may feed on surface molds found on cardboard boxes found in damp basements or attics. They don t come in through your exterior walls and they have a really hard time breathing in your attic or anywhere that is outside of the water. Houses with cedar shake roofs may be more prone to silverfish infestations because mold can easily form on these shingles.

Silver fish are not generally an attic pest. They live in cracks and voids. Make sure that vents are open in the crawlspace. But the insect known as the silverfish does come in through your exterior walls and has no problem breathing in your attic.

They feed on mold which occurs in high moisture situations and organic matter. Commonly found in stored boxes in garages and sheds. In buildings silverfish can only exist in sufficiently humid crevice rich environments. The attic is often a good choice for them because it is not dehumidified by the ac in the summer or the heat in the winter.

Other measures that may be taken to eliminate silverfish at least temporarily include the following. Have an exterminator inspect your apartment. This includes attics basements garages and kitchens where they can feed on dust unsealed dried food and clutter like paper.
